Indigenous employment campaign launch: nice try, white man, but what really IS in your hearts, eh?
Nothing embarrasses (white) Australia more than the condition of its indigenous people. So some of its richest businessmen, led by iron ore billionaire Andrew Forrest, are launching an ambitious philanthropic campaign to boost job prospects for Aborigines (native Australians, pls) and needle the government into doing more. Dubbed Generation One, it’s set to start in the middle of this month, and it’ll be a multi-media effort designed to raise awareness of the high unemployment and poor health of Aborigines….. Billionaire Andrew Forrest aims to use his wealth to help Australia’s indigenous population - For the 48-year-old Forrest–with a fortune that FORBES ASIA estimates at .1 billion, the largest in the country (see Australia’s 40 Richest)–helping indigenous Australians will be a key part of his future. He promises to give away the bulk of his wealth and devote much of the rest of his life to philanthropy. “I’m already dedicating half my time to philanthropy,” he says. “The aim is to make it full-time.” For more than two years Forrest has been working to get more Aborigines into jobs. But he’s run smack into bureaucratic inertia. In fact, the main goal of Generation One is to revive his 2008 plan to train and find jobs for Aborigines, called the Australian Employment Covenant.
