Apple, Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) CEO Steve Jobs took the stage in Cupertino, California Friday afternoon to address the iPhone 4’s antenna-reception issues, which have frustrated Apple fans and fed fuel to critics of the number-one rated smartphone by Wired, Engadget, PC World and Consumer Reports. The iPhone 4 sold a staggering three million units in its first three weeks on tech shelves, but Jobs admitted “…we’re not perfect. We know that, you know that. And phones aren’t perfect either.” Jobs said Apple has been feverishly working on fixing the antenna problem, dubbed “Antennagate,” for 22 days. Research in Motion Limited’s (NASDAQ:RIMM) BlackBerry Bold 9700, HTC’s Droid Eris and Samsung’s Omnia II were shown to the audience to demonstrate that other smart phones experience a decrease in reception when held in a particular manner. Jobs said that AppleCare complaints on antenna-reception issues were reportedly 0.55%, or one half of one percent. The iPhone 4 reportedly drops one additional call per 100 than the 3GS model. Jobs said the latest iOS 4 version released yesterday will fix bars and exchange the bug, and Apple will provide a full refund to unhappy customers wishing to return their undamaged iPhone 4s within 30 days of purchase. Apple will also dole out a free iPhone case to customers who apply on Apple’s website late next week; the company will also refund the full bumper price for all iPhone 4s purchased through September 30th. “So the heart of the problem is

News Update: Steve Jobs Calls Apple iPhone 4 Antenna Problem a “Non Issue”

Apple’s (NASDAQ:AAPL) new iPhone 4, released today, was met with long lines and some controversy. Certain users have reported complaints of reduced wireless network reception when the new phone was held a certain way. The new iPhone 4 design places the antenna in the lower left hand corner of the phone - a place where many happen to hold the phone while making calls. Users have sent emails directly to Steve Jobs who at first curtly responded “Non issue. Just avoid holding it in that way.” Jobs later followed up, likely with some feedback from the internal PR department, with a more thorough explanation: “Gripping any phone will result in some attenuation of its antenna performance, with certain places being worse than others depending on the placement of the antennas. This is a fact of life for every wireless phone. If you ever experience this on your iPhone 4, avoid gripping it in the lower left corner in a way that covers both sides of the black strip in the metal band, or simply use one of many available cases.” This is causing a bit of a stir to many in the iPhone and Apple community. Some new buyers, who spent the better part of several days in line waiting to shell out upwards of 0 for the phone, must now learn to hold it another way or purchase an additional accessory. Interestingly, Apple has for the first time made its own case, called the “bumper”. Good timing.
